How to Play Party Games

Parties are a fun way to gather together, mingle, catch up, and have a great time. Truth or Dare

Truth or dare is one of the most controversial of all party games, but it's also one of the most fun to play. First, everyone gathers in a circle and then someone starts off asking another player "truth or dare." The player can choose to answer a tough question truthfully, or they can accept a dare. If they choose dare, they must do whatever the person asking them tells them to. The game is basically improvisational, and players can ask personal questions, or dare someone to do something wild and crazy. The game is suited for all ages since each age group will come up with their very own truths or dares. There are several other party games that guests can play as well.

Charades

Charades is a definite classic party game. The purpose of charades is to use your hands to describe an object, movie, song, or other phrase. The players must guess what you are "signing" to them without you speaking. Generally, charades divides the group into two teams, and then words, movie names, or phrases are written on small pieces of paper. One player at a time chooses a phrase from the bowl, and then has a certain amount of time they can use hand signals to get their team to guess what the secret phrase is. Teams can choose how many points are awarded before the game is over. If a team gets the clue before the clock runs out, they are awarded a point.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey

This is a classic children's party game that has been popular for decades. A poster or picture of a donkey is placed on the wall at a level where children can reach. The child is blindfolded and spun around slowly, and then told to pin the plastic or paper tail onto the backside of the donkey. Wherever the tail ends up is marked, and the child who gets the tail pinned onto the donkey the closest to the target wins the game. A small prize is usually given.

Hot Potato

This is a fast paced game that can be played inside or outside, depending on the number of people and the type of party. Everyone gathers in a circle, preferably sitting down cross-legged. You can use an actual potato, ball, or any other object you like and declare that it is "hot." Have a tape recorder or CD player handy, and once the music starts (you can use any music of your choosing), yell "hot potato" and the game starts at that point. The person holding the hot object must pass it onto others within the circle, and they throw it to someone else. This continues until the music stops. When the music is over, anyone holding the hot potato is out of the game. Continue the game until the last person remains, and they are the winner.

Musical Chairs

Musical chairs is much like hot potato in the sense that there is music starting and stopping abruptly. For musical chairs, arrange two rows of chairs with the backs facing each other. Make sure there is one less chair than there are people playing. Start the music, and everyone must run around the rows of chairs. As soon as the music stops, everyone must sit in a chair as quickly as possible. The person still standing is out of the game. Then, remove another chair and repeat this process. As the game goes on, someone will always end up without a chair since one is removed every time. The person who is the last to sit down in the final chair is declared the winner.

Scavenger Hunt

Hosting a scavenger hunt is one of the most creative and fun games for parties and gatherings. The host of the party comes up with a list of clues describing things for everyone to find. The list can consist of local landmarks if you're adventurous, or just things that the host has hidden around the house or around the party location. Divide your party into small teams, and then send them on their way to find the things in the scavenger hunt. These items can be actual things, or the teams can provide pictures proving they found the items based on your clues. Whichever team comes back with the entire correct list first wins the game.
