A quite laughable statement has been made in today’s edition of ‘This is Nottingham’ the online local news publication, the statement is that there is currently a bingo war being waged in Nottingham between the long established Gala Bingo Club in St. Ann’s and the newly opened Mecca Bingo hall in Beeston. Quite what the bingo war is the writer is not too clear on, but Gala Bingo hall staff allegedly have been ‘spotted numerous times at Mecca Beeston’. The writer goes on to state that since the new flagship £5m Mecca Bingo hall opened, his wife and mother-in-law have not returned to their once favourite bingo haunt, The Gala Bingo hall in St. Ann’s.If you are going to say something – then spit it out ….
The writer of the article in question would be better placed finding some real facts to support such an accusation rather than implying there is some wrong doing. Making such statements could be regarded as mischief making by some or even possibly slanderous and the writer is far from explicit as to what Gala Bingo hall staff are alleged to have done. The writer also goes on to make quite a statement about the new bingo game and the bingo players of Mecca Bingo Beeston when he says ‘It's bingo for idiots. There's never been any skill involved’ Well sir who said that playing a Bingo game and enjoying a sociable night out ever needed to be about skill - bingo players don’t need to know anything about the ‘off-side rule’, how to adopt a poker face, what the Queensbury rules might be, or for that matter how to down ten pints of beer. No sir, all we bingo players need to know is how to have a good time.
Mecca Bingo and Gala Bingo are happy to share the bingo pie!
Being a peaceful bunch – both bingo players and bingo hall staff - we find it hard to believe that there is any kind of dirty tricks or bingo wars going on in Nottingham. The bingo players may be leaving Gala Bingo hall to play at Mecca Bingo in Beeston at the moment and that would be quite understandable as the club has just opened and therefore is always going to attract a fair bit of interest. There is room for various types of bingo hall and the new modern and up to date Mecca Bingo hall in Beeston is certainly all about attracting either new bingo players or old bingo players back to the bingo hall venue, and not as claimed in the report to steal players away from their rivals.
Mecca Bingo and Gala Bingo are big well known names and each are appreciative of the part that the other has to play in the industry, neither trying to rain on their competitor’s parade. Both have even just recently joined forces to fight the unfair 22% tax levied on the bingo industry in the 'I’m Backing Bingo’ campaign, as reported in our earlier articles. We are therefore sure that even if Gala Bingo are checking out the opposition at the Mecca Bingo hall, that it is purely out of polite curiosity and in no way can be seen as any type of threat or intimidation.
